CPS partners with Groupon to gift school supplies to local kids

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Groupon buyers can help local children get the back-to-school supplies they need just by purchasing a daily deal.

Chicago Public Schools has partnered with Groupon Grassroots, the philanthropic arm of the online discounter, to sell back-to-school kits.

You can purchase the kits on Groupon's site starting Monday, July 30 through Tuesday, Aug. 7.

The kits will be given to children at festivals and back-to-school events.

Each $11 kit includes a year's worth of school supplies. An $18 kit includes a new backpack.

More than 1,200 "Kits for Kidz" were donated after last year's efforts.

This Groupon/CPS partnership comes about amid new survey results that show the majority of parents will be spending more money on school supplies this year.

The survey found nine out of ten consumers plan to spend the same or more on back-to-school shopping compared to last year.

About 60 percent of those who plan to spend more said they'll do so because items cost more. More than one-third said their children need more expensive items this year.

The survey also found a growing number of parents need to buy more school supplies for their kids because their schools are buying less.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
