Mob robbery in Wicker Park caught on tape

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A group of more than a dozen young men were captured on surveillance video as they robbed a Wicker Park retailer.

The Wicker Park clothing store owner is using social media to fight back against a flash mob he says stole $3,000 worth of designer denim.

"They came marching in and basically ransacked the place and tried to grab whatever they could and run out. It looks like organized looting to me, some call it a flash mob," said Luke Cho, owner of Mildblend Supply Co.

Out of frustration, Cho posted the flash-mob style takeover on YouTube, hoping to help police catch the criminals. The video shows the group infiltrating the store, in a calm yet coordinated fashion. It happened Saturday night just steps away from the main attraction at Wicker Park Fest.

Not everyone seen in the video is related to the crime.

"We can handle one or two incidents but this is very different, preplanned, organized and they were about to take control of the whole store," said Cho.

Cho says since opening six months ago, he's encountered a dozen shoplifting incidents but nothing like this. The teens wearing white t-shirts, tank tops and baseball caps are seen gathering jeans and stuffing them into book bags.

"They were focusing on one section of the store where we keep our a little more expensive denim. It looks like they kind of knew what they wanted to take and they went for it. We weren't prepared at all so they obviously very quickly overwhelmed us," said Cho.

The mob-style robbery happened as day one of the Wicker Park Fest was coming to a close. Cho says maintaining security at the festival is a challenge and attendee Marie Araque agrees.

"I don't think there's really any security and the people who are walking around who look like security, look like they're having a great time, said Araque.

Kevin Richards has volunteered at the street fest two years in a row and says the store robbery is an isolated incident.

"Absolutely, a real anomaly... If you look at everything here, I think they've done an amazing job with security... There have been problems all over the city with flash mobs so I don't think you can blame it on anything pertaining to the festival," said Richards.

Chicago police tell Fox Chicago News the incident is an ongoing investigation.
