CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a 3-car crash on the Kennedy Expressway Sunday morning that led to the death of a 23-year-old woman.
The crash happened about 4:30 a.m. in the outbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway at Armitage Avenue, according to Illinois State Police District Chicago Trooper Ivan Bukaczyk.
A car with five occupants struck two vans, Bukaczyk said. The driver of that car had lost control of the vehicle, striking a concrete wall to the left, then crossed back into traffic, striking the other two vehicles, according to Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Jason LoCoco.
A 23-year-old woman who was a passenger in that first car was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead, according to state police.
Alcohol was a factor in the crash, the master sergeant said. As of about 1:45 p.m. the crash was still under investigation and no charges had been filed, LoCoco said.
The two right lanes of the Kennedy near Armitage and the exit ramp to Armitage were closed for more than seven hours after the crash, but they were reopened to traffic about noon, LoCoco said.
