Ex-official's seized property a dazzling sight

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

A king-size bed, five televisions, a leather coach and a fully outfitted kitchen: These are among the amenities in a $2.1 million motor home seized from a former northern Illinois city comptroller accused of embezzling more than $53 million.

Former Dixon Comptroller Rita Crundwell is accused of misappropriating the city funds since 1990 by siphoning money into a secret bank account. Prosecutors say she used the money to support her nationally renowned horse breeding operations and luxurious tastes. Crundwell has pleaded not guilty to a charge of wire fraud.

Agents have seized hundreds of her horses and other items that they plan to auction off.

Her 2009 Liberty Coach motor home is up for grabs, and viewings held over the past week in Oak Creek, Wis., drew potential buyers and the curious, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.

The hulking vehicle spans 45 feet from front to back and has two slide-outs to make it even roomier.

"Truly no expense spared," commented Tony Stevens, a contractor for the U.S. Marshals Service, which is tasked with unloading seized inventory.

If Crundwell is found guilty, the money raised from the auction of property will go toward restitution for Dixon.

Other amenities on the RV include a 42-inch TV that drops from the ceiling at the push of a button, a satellite dish, a full-size stainless steel refrigerator-freezer with French doors and a hidden safe under the bed.

"It's very lavish," said Jeanne Kuhn, the wife of a Dixon commissioner who came to view the vehicle.

Those interested in the motor home have until Wednesday to put in a bid of at least $1 million.

And if the over-the-top interior isn't enough to make you interested, just check out the license plate: "2 Thms Up," it reads.
