In just three days, Georgian will head to the polls and for those living in the metro Atlanta region, the biggest issue just might be the Transportation Sales Tax Referendum.
This weekend, critic and advocates are out making a last-minute push to sway voters.
Hundreds of people attended a rally Saturday afternoon in Centennial Olympic Park with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. Reed has supported the penny sales tax to help several transportation projects.
FOX 5's Portia Bruner spoke with notable Atlanta resident and Civil Rights icon Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery who threw his support behind the sales tax on Saturday saying it would help get people back to work.
Meanwhile, probably the most vocal opponent to the new tax is Georgia State Senator Vincent Fort. He was joined by a group going door-to-door urging people to vote against the tax hike.
Most common purchases would be taxed except for a few items such as gas and prescription drugs. The tax would be applied towards items like groceries, clothing, and over-the-counter drugs.
The tax also would be tacked on to the first $5,000 towards an automobile purchase except in counties that already pay a Public Transit Sales Tax.
