CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Gayle Watkins, 52, was trying to cross the street at Pulaski and Lake on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. when witnesses say a grey or silver Chevy Malibu or Impala hit her so hard, her body was thrown on top of the vehicle, rolled off and ended up on the other side of the street.
Witnesses said the driver may have been trying to beat the light. Several surveillance cameras mounted on nearby businesses show the hit and run from a couple of angles. You can see Watkins taking a few steps into the crosswalk before she spots the car speeding at her.
The impact broke her legs and ribs. She is in a coma. Some of her 12 children were waiting for news at the hospital on Thursday night.
Witnesses said that the lights along this street have been out since Tuesday's storm, and wondered if the lights could have prevented this.
