A Roswell man says an Atlanta parking ticket that went to collections could cost him $75,000.
Darryl Lanier, 64, said he didn't realize that his car had received a parking citation. He said his adult daughter had been driving the vehicle. He first learned of the $25 when his mortgage banker informed him as he tried to refinance his two-story home.
Lanier believes the collection agency should have communicated with him before reporting him to the credit bureau.
"Having a simple step in place that would require the collection bureau to have something signed saying it was received would probably resolve that," said Lanier. "Perhaps a phone call."
The collection agency claims that it sent two letters, which Lanier said he never received.
The Roswell homeowner said he paid the fine but claimed the ticket caused his credit score to drop by 100 points.
"It ruins my credit rating," said Lanier.
Lanier estimated that if can't refinance his home, it will cost him $75,000 in interest.
Park Atlanta representative Anderson Moore said that the company sent a letter to the credit bureau on July 13 to de-list Lanier and another one on Thursday. Moore said that it usually takes about seven days to remove an item from a credit report.
Lanier said the mortgage company contacted him on Thursday saying they would work with him. He said he has a wait-and-see attitude.
