Owners of dogs that terrorized shoppers said they're 'loveable'

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The owners of two dogs that spooked people inside an Elmwood Park Staples store on Tuesday said they are glad the animals didn't hurt anyone.

Max, a one-year-old Akita, and Diamond, a two-year-old Cane Corso, were dragged out of the store by officers, as you can see in this exclusive FOX Chicago News video. No one was bitten, but a woman had to be transported for symptoms of a diabetic attack.

The family believes they were spooked by fireworks and stormy weather. This is the second time the dogs have escaped from their backyard in Chicago.

"I got home to feed the dogs and they just wasn't there," Travis Ellis said. "But, as soon as I was coming in the animal hospital was calling me, letting me know where they was at, so that was a big relief."

A big relief, but one that left him with a very important concern.

"I hoped that nobody got hurt. I hoped the dogs didn't bite anybody. That was my biggest fear," Ellis said.

Ellis said Max is lovable, but territorial. He's thankful no one was hurt, but isn't surprised by the dog's actions as the wandered from Chicago into Elmwood Park.

"They just don't know. Everybody is threat to them when they're out and about," Ellis said. "Everyone is a threat."

The family was ticketed for each dog not being leashed. For now, the dogs are leashed when they're in the yard or placed in a kennel when the family leaves, so this won't happen again.
