Bob Sirott's one more thing about London

Posted: Updated:

One more thing about the news coming out of London lately.

It's official.  I've finally gotten over Chicago losing out on the 2016 Olympic games.

There are still two days to go until it all begins, but what's been happening in England so far has made me feel better about our town's loss.

The private contractor hired to provide guards admitted they were at least 3,500 people short, sending the military scrambling to make up the gap. Other security personnel were not trained properly or failed to show up, forcing police to provide additional security driving Olympic costs up even higher as the UK's economy continues to struggle.
Motorists have been even more confused than usual trying to drive London's streets.  Traffic lanes were marked as "closed except for Olympic transportation vehicles"  but signs didn't indicate that the restrictions don't start until the games do.

Buses carrying athletes got lost on the way to Olympic Park.   Local train drivers, passport officials, and border guards have gone on strike.

And if all this weren't enough -- severe storms are predicted to return to London this weekend.
Of course, after the always-spectacular opening ceremonies Friday night, I'll probably be fantasizing about how great it would have been to see the opening of the 2016 Games here -- emceed by Jim Belushi.
On second thought -- NATO was enough.  Good luck, London.   Good luck, Rio.
