ATLANTA -

The final push to win votes for the transportation referendum features names from across the political spectrum, but opponents of the proposed penny-on-the-dollar tax still believe they are winning the argument.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and other metro leaders appear in a new cable TV ad from transportation referendum supporters targeted at Democratic voters.

Separately, the mayor cited endorsements from environmental groups.

"So many of the organizations – the overwhelming number of the leading environment organizations in the region endorsed the transportation referendum," said Reed.

At the same time, referendum supporters are reaching out to conservative voters with a commercial invoking the legacy of President Ronald Reagan.

The 1-cent sales tax would raise $7 billion for transportation improvements in metro Atlanta.

Opponents of the referendum admit that they lack the funding for a TV campaign.

"The other side is trying to buy the election. They've got $8 million. I'm told we have about $800 and we're beating them because we have the right side," said state Sen. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta).

The debate will continue until election day on July 31.

Supporters hope the backing of local environmental groups will counter the earlier decision by the Georgia Sierra Club to oppose the referendum.

The Sierra Club said the proposed project list is too heavily tilted toward roads.
