State stepping in on Sauk Village water problems

Posted: Updated:
SAUK VILLAGE, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

Residents in far south suburban Sauk Village will soon be able to drink the water in their town, since the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has stepped in.

The Illinois EPA recently put filters on the city's main wells. Two portable purification systems should be in place by the middle of next week. That should reduce the level of vinyl chloride in the water.

Last week, residents were warned that the vinyl chloride levels in their drinking water had reached levels high enough to require the town to take action and let residents know.

Vinyl chloride is odorless and tasteless and over time could cause cancer or potentially other health issues. It is a carcinogen and the federal EPA says there is no safe level of exposure to it.

The air-stripping system will be in place next week should reduce those levels to make it nearly non-existent.

Meanwhile, village officials are continuing to provide free bottled water to residents.
