Bob Sirott's One More Thing about policing information sources

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One more thing about policing information sources.

This month there have been two troubling stories about fabricated and plagiarized news stories.

The Chicago Tribune recently suspended their use of the company they hired to provide content to 22 suburban Trib local publications--"Journatic" after it was determined their stories had quotes lifted from other papers as well as fake by-lines.

Then the Sun-Times fired a photographer for making up numerous names and captions in features appearing in Sun-Times owned Pioneer Press publications. Complaints from the public and from other media organizations prompted both actions.

I thought of all this yesterday when various web sites reported that Ryan Dempster of the Cubs was traded to Atlanta. Who's policing internet sites and blogs? Who's vetting those----where are the new media filters? How many on-line news sources are as vigilant about accurate reporting and protective of their journalistic reputations as old media organizations like the tribune and sun-times?

Those two incidents of shoddy journalism that the Trib and Sun-times acted on remind me why I still trust old fashioned newspapers.
