CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A man who threatened to shoot a teller while robbing a north suburban bank has arrested and charged, and remains a suspect another robbery earlier this month.
Larry D. Williams, 51, of the 2100 block of Emmaus Avenue in Zion, was charged Monday with one count of bank robbery, according to FBI Spc. Agent Joan Hyde.
Williams is accused of stealing $4,565 from the TCF Bank branch in the 3100 block of North Lewis Avenue in Waukegan on July 18, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court.
He is also suspected, but has not yet been charged, with the July 2 robbery of the TCF Bank branch in the 900 block of North Green Bay Road in Waukegan, according to Hyde.
Williams entered the bank inside a Jewel Osco grocery about 11:30 a.m. on July 18 and told a teller he needed change for a $20 bill, according to an affidavit. When the teller opened the door, Williams threw a gray plastic bag and said, "Fill it up."
The teller said the robber demanded large bills and produced an object resembling a gun wrapped in a plastic bag and said, "I will pop you" the affidavit said.
The teller emptied the contents of the draw into the bag and gave it back to Williams, who asked for more money, the affidavit said. When he learned there was no more money in the drawer, he walked away and said, "I know how you get to work. Don't call anyone."
Authorities learned from surveillance video that Williams fled in a gray Mercury Grand Marquis, the affidavit said. After seeing surveillance images online, a witness called the FBI Chicago and identified Williams, providing details about his location and vehicle.
The FBI and Chicago Police arrested Williams without incident in the 4800 block of South Michigan Avenue, Hyde said in a statement. U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Cole ordered him held without bond Monday pending a Thursday court hearing.
In the July 2 incident, the robber entered Jewel Osco about 12:30 p.m. and handed the teller a note that read, "Don't be no hero and nobody will get hurt. Put all 100s, 50s, 20s, 10s in my bag. Don't make no noise. I will hurt you. I have nothing to lose or die for," according to the affidavit.
The teller put $2,650 in the bag and the robber threatened to shoot if the teller hit the alarm as he fled.
