Natural gas causes home explosion on South Side

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A natural gas explosion occurred at a vacant home Monday morning in the South Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

A still and box alarm was called about 9:30 a.m. following a report of an explosion and fire at 9010 S. Normal Ave., Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.

The side walls of the single story, brick house have collapsed and the home is unstable, Langford said. A neighboring home also sustained damage.

The fire was extinguished by 10 a.m.

Neighbors said the home has been vacant since the previous residents moved away months ago, Langford said. Firefighters used a robotic camera to check the inside of the home for victims, but no one was found.

Peoples Gas had previously shut off gas to the home, but the gas meter was believed to have been tampered with and turned back on illegally, Langford said. Crews are currently working to shut off power.

The city's Building Dept. was also called to the scene.
