Yahoo maternity leave controversy and the rising poverty rate: Chat Room

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Monday's Chat Room, consultant Rochelle Trotter and the Sun-Times' Susanna Negovan talk about maternity leave and the rising poverty rate.

Last week, Yahoo announced it was hiring a new CEO, Marissa Mayer, who is six months pregnant. She said she'll be able to work during her maternity leave, but many are asking if a "working maternity leave" is the new norm - and whether or not this will help or hurt women in the long run.

Susanna said this is good news for working women; it means that being of child-bearing age doesn't have to be a strike against you when interviewing for a high-powered job. Rochelle agrees, adding that women are capable of juggling motherhood and their careers.

Next up, alarming news about the economy: a new report says that more people now live in poverty than we've seen in half a century. For Chicago it's worse than the national average: 22 percent of all city residents live below the poverty rate.

Rochelle said that tax credits need to reward work, which would enable low-wage families to move up economically. Susanna said that this information is particularly newsworthy as the Chicago Public Schools debate rages on; education is the key to easing families out of poverty, and Chicago's short school days and low graduation rate contribute to the problem.
