A ticket to see 'The Dark Knight Rises" this weekend
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) -
Somber moviegoers turned out Friday morning to see the latest installment of the Batman series despite a tragic attack on fans inside a Colorado theater that left 12 people dead and at least 50 others injured.
"It's devastating to hear that someone would go into a movie randomly shoot and hurt innocent people," said Stacy White, who still plans on escorting a group of 150 children from Perfecting Church in Detroit to see the movie this weekend.
Huntington Woods mother Leslie Hawring, however, was concerned about her children seeing "The Dark Knight Rises."
"I was scared," Hawring, who took her middle school child to see the movie. "I was worried about him seeing it today without supervision."
Police in Aurora, Colo. say James Holmes, the suspected 24-year-old gunman, was dressed in dark clothing with a bullet proof vest and a gas mask when hurled a gas canister and then opened fire. But hardcore Batman fans say they do not feel he was trying to model himself after any character in the film.
"I don't think it has any reflection on the movie. I think someone just knew it would bring in a huge crowd and just wanted to do something so crazy," said Dorian Stewart, a fan of the movie series.
Others say the tragedy will be fresh in the minds of people who head to the theater this weekend. "I think it will be in the back of a lot of people's minds but once the movie starts and you start watching it, it kind of goes out the window and you forget about it," said Erik Stewart.
FOX 2 spoke to officials at the Emagine Theatre in Royal Oak who say they have no plans to alter any of the theatre's normal security procedures over the weekend.
