CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Local movie-goers are reacting Friday morning to a mass shooting that took place during a showing of the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises" at a Colorado movie theater.
The shooting is casting a cloud over "Dark Knight" premieres across the country and around the world. In Paris, officials have canceled the premiere.
The Regal Stadium 14 theater in Chicago has numerous showings of the film Friday. Patrons who saw the movie early Friday morning weren't aware of the news coming out of Colorado until after they left the theater.
Two women, one from Colorado, checked their cell phones as they left and were shocked at the news.
"Actually she's from Colorado. She told me almost when the movie finished, ‘Hey, listen to this. This just happened in Colorado.' That's really disturbing. Why would someone go and ruin something -- so many families and children that went to this. They just died like that? That's so shocking. You never know what's going to happen when you go anywhere. You think you'll have a good time, then all of a sudden there's people dead around you," one of the women said.
"I'm still shaky. You think that could have been any theater any time. That's not something you want to happen ever. You can only feel for the families of those 14 people dead, 50 injured. That's not something you ever want to hear," the other women said.
The incident in Colorado occurred at a moment of high intensity in the film, during a shooting scene.
One movie-goer described the shooting as life imitating art.
Chicago, Naperville and other police departments in our area are increasing patrols at movie theaters.
The Chicago Police said in a statement:
The Chicago Police
Department extends its sincere condolences and prayers to the victims and
families of the tragic incident in Colorado. We are in contact with our law
enforcement partners investigating this incident. We will remain vigilant in our
enforcement efforts and give special attention to movie theaters throughout the
City.
