The Chicago Cubs today acquired right-handed pitcher Justin Germano from the Boston Red Sox for a cash consideration. Right-handed pitcher Jairo Asencio has been designated for assignment.
Germano, who will wear uniform number 41, is expected to be available for the Cubs tomorrow night when the club opens its three-game series in St. Louis.
The 29-year-old Germano had his contract selected by the Red Sox on July 4 and tossed 5.2 scoreless innings in relief on July 7 vs. the Yankees before being designated for assignment on July 13. The Cubs represent Germano's fifth major league club, joining the San Diego Padres (2004, 2007-08), Cincinnati Reds (2006), Cleveland Indians (2010-11) and Red Sox (2012). He has also pitched professionally in Japan and Korea.
The righthander went 9-4 with a 2.40 ERA (28 ER/105.0 IP) in 17 appearances (16 starts) with Triple-A Pawtucket this season. He struck out 72 and walked only 13 batters in 105.0 innings. Germano limited opponents to a .211 batting average.
Germano is a career 8-20 with a 4.91 ERA (141 ER/258.2 IP) in 80 major league appearances, including 36 starts. He saw his most extensive big league action with the Padres in 2007, when he went 7-10 with a 4.46 ERA (66 ER/133.1 IP) in 26 appearances, 23 as a starter.
The righthander was originally selected by the Padres in the 13th round of the 2000 Draft.
Asencio posted no record and a 3.07 ERA (5 ER/14.2 IP) in 12 big league appearances with the Cubs. He walked 11 and struck out eight in 14.2 innings. He was claimed off waivers by the Cubs from Cleveland on June 1.
