CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Chicago police say they are talking with a "person of interest" in the
hit-and-run that killed a Cook County correctional officer Wednesday
night.
Officer Nikkii Bostic-Jones was crossing the street near the jail's entrance at 29th and California at around 10:50 Wednesday night, when a vehicle heading north on California struck her.
Witnesses said the driver struck her with such force she flew into the air into oncoming traffic and was then struck by a sheriff's deputy's car heading south. She was pinned under that car.
Bostic-Jones, 38, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious to critical condition. She did not survive her injuries.
FOX Chicago News was on the scene Thursday evening when Chicago police detectives checked out the damage on a blue van that's suspected to be the car used in the hit-and-run. It was parked in a school lot just blocks away from last nights deadly accident.
Sources say the van was driven by a 54-year-old man who lives blocks away from the scene of the hit-and-run.
Those who have to enter this gate face challenges trying to get past traffic using the crosswalk each day. Although they would not comment on camera, some employees told FOX Chicago News that they have been concerned about this problem for quite some time.
James Jones says that driver took away his wife, friend and soul mate. They fell in love 20 years ago and have been married seven. Jones says while he's grieving her loss, he had to tell their 6-year-old daughter that mommy won't be coming home.
