CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Former Cook County correctional officer Kenneth Crawford pleaded guilty Tuesday to smuggling marijuana into the jail and was sentenced to probation.

Crawford pleaded guilty before Cook County Judge Nicholas Ford on Tuesday to one count each of bringing contraband into a penal institution and official misconduct, and was sentenced to two years probation, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin said.

Crawford, 35, of the 1000 block of North Howe, was arrested March 16, 2010, after being found to be in possession of marijuana while working in the Cook County Jail's maximum security area, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.

The sheriff's Office of Administrative Review discovered the plot after launching an investigation following a tip. Chicago Public Schools teacher David Cambero, 61, was also arrested.

Investigators approached Crawford while he was working and found a small amount of marijuana hidden in his boot. He struggled with investigators as they attempted to detain him, sheriff's police said.

The jail's K9 unit also found a package containing 30 grams of marijuana in the trunk of Crawford's car.
