Metra to make trains cars more technology-friendly

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Metra trains will undergo upgrades soon. The commuter rail line is making its cars more technology-friendly.

One hundred seventy-six rail cars are being fitted with electrical outlets, so passengers can plug in laptops and cell phones.

Perhaps just as importantly, the cars are getting new seats and toilets. They'll also get upgraded emergency intercoms.

Metra said the retrofitting will save millions.

Rebuilding a train car costs about $650,000 compared to $3 million for a new one.
