Food truck owners rallying against ordinance

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago's food truck operators are rallying to change a proposed city ordinance regulating their industry.

There are 123 food truck operators currently selling everything from cupcakes to egg rolls, tacos and sandwiches.

The proposed ordinance would give them the ability to prepare food for serving in the truck which they like. As it is food has to be prepared on-site elsewhere and then transferred to the trucks.

So Tiffany Kurtz who owns and operates two Flirty Cupcakes trucks out of her brick and mortar bakery in Chicago's Little Italy neighborhood likes that part of the proposed ordinance but not the part that limits where the goods can be sold.

That is to say no where within 200-feet of an existing restaurant.

"We think there is room for compromise where food truck operators can co-exist with restaurants situated on whatever corner," says Kurtz who says similar agreements have been reached in Los Angeles, Austin and other cities.

Kurtz and the other food truck operators are rallying via social media Thursday encouraging their supporters to tweet, email and Facebook Chicago's city council members who serve in the licensing committee.
