A 35-year-old Merrillville woman died Tuesday morning when her van struck a tree in the 2200 block of West 57th Avenue about 4 a.m.
Rebecca A. Thieling, of the 5300 block of Grant Street, died from blunt force trauma, according to a release from the Lake County Coroner's office. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Merrillville police say speed was a factor in the crash. Toxicology reports are not yet available.
Thieling was driving a silver Chevorlet minivan and there was one male passenger, whom police have not identified. His injuries did not appear to be life threatening, Merrillville Detective Sgt. Jeff Rice said.
