Man rescued after 3 hours buried in trench

Posted: Updated:

After nearly three hours, Detroit rescue crews rescued a man out of a trench on the city's west side.

Watch Alexis Wiley's full video report above.

The men were working to install a water line when the dirt around them collapsed. The workers did not have proper permits to be digging, and the city and state are now investigating.

At one point the man was buried up to his neck.

Fox 2 has learned that three men were stuck.  Two were freed after just a few minutes.

It took much longer to free the second man.  Initially Detroit EMS crews were only able to clear enough dirt to free the man's chest and arms.  It took another 90-minutes to pull him completely from the trench.

In a coordinated effort, crews used hand shovels to dig as wooden boards were placed into the trench as a method to stabilize the ground and prevent more dirt from falling on top of him.

Sources confirm the men were working on a sewer line on Cruse street in the neighborhood near Schaeffer and Puritan.

Skyfox was on the scene.  Play recorded video in the player above to view rescue.
