West Nile Virus found in Mundelein mosquitoes

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Mosquitoes with West Nile Virus have been discovered in north suburban Mundelein, marking the first sighting in Lake County this year.

Despite the lack of rain, Culex mosquitoes, the mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus, tend to thrive in dry conditions, the release said.

"Hot weather typically increases mosquito activity," Irene Pierce, Lake County Health Department executive director, said in a statement. "You can protect yourself against mosquito bites by following the three R's - reduce your exposure to mosquitoes, repel them by wearing insect repellent, and report areas where mosquitoes typically breed."

In 2011, no humans, one bird and 14 mosquito pools tested positive for the virus in Lake County, the release said.

Lake County residents can call the West Nile virus hotline at (847) 377-8300 to report areas of stagnant water (conducive for breeding), or to obtain information on the signs of the disease.
