A man was ordered held on $1 million bond Tuesday after being charged with murder because his accomplice in a South Side robbery was shot dead by police, according to prosecutors.
Tevin Louis, 19, of the 500 block of West Winneconna Parkway was charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of armed robbery and one count of disorderly conduct. On Tuesday, Judge Laura Sullivan ordered him held on $1 million.
Louis and 19-year-old Marquise Sampson entered King Gyros at 7904 S. Vincennes Ave. about 5 a.m. Sunday wearing masks and plastic gloves, and demanded money at gunpoint from two employees, according to court documents.
They took cash from the register, and cigarettes, cash and a cell phone from at least one of the employees, court documents said. The items were placed in a backpack; Louis fled with the bag and Sampson fled a short time later.
Uniformed Gresham District beat officers patrolling the area saw Sampson holding his side while running in the 500 block of West Winneconna, according to police and court documents.
Police said the officers told him to stop, but he kept running. The officers chased Sampson, who pulled a weapon and pointed it at one of the officers, who shot him twice, court documents said. The officers were not injured.
Louis, 19, returned to the area of the shooting and was arrested for disorderly conduct when he tried to enter the guarded crime scene, according to court documents. He later admitted to his participation in the robbery.
Sampson, 19, of the 7200 block of South Stewart Avenue, was dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. An autopsy determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds and the death was ruled a homicide.
Police found a black knit cap with the eyes and mouth cut out, a revolver with one live round, and one plastic glove on Sampson, according to the court documents. He was wearing the other glove.
Witnesses saw a person remove a backpack from a garbage can in the 400 block of West Winneconna and police found a black cap with the eye holes cut out in the can, court documents said.
Surveillance video from the restaurant captured the robbery, and Louis allegedly told a third party of his involvement.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting.
