Firefighter hurt fighting wildfire in Zion

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A firefighter was injured battling a wildfire Sunday afternoon in north suburban Zion.

Emergency crews responded at 11:15 a.m. to a fire spreading across a large open area of grass and heavy brush between 21st and 25th streets along the Lake Michigan shoreline, according to a release from the Zion Fire Department.

About 40 fire personnel from 19 suburban departments worked to fight flames that engulfed 50 acres of heavy brush and wooded areas, the release said.

The wind was driving the fire, causing it to advance rapidly. Some of the heavy brush was burned defensively to contain the flames.

A firefighter was injured although it was unclear the extent of his injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
