Police shot and killed a man who allegedly pulled out a gun when officers tried to stop him for questioning on the South Side Sunday morning.
About 5 a.m., uniformed officers in a beat car from the Gresham District were on patrol in the area of 79th Street and Vincennes Avenue when they saw a man running westbound on 79th Street, according to a statement from police News Affairs.
Officers told the man to stop so they could question him, but he kept running, the statement said.
The officers saw the man, believed to be in his 20s, fumbling with something in his right hand, which authorities later learned was a black knit cap, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said.
One of the officers got out of the squad car and chased him on foot to the intersection of 78th and Normal while the other tried to block him with the car.
The police car stopped him in a driveway in the 400 block of West Winneconna Parkway, where, as he was being pursued on foot by the other officer, the man then allegedly pulled a gun out of the knit cap, turned toward the pursuing officer and pointed the gun in the officer's direction, police and Camden said. The officer opened fire, fatally wounding the man, the statement said. The man was dead at the scene. Police recovered a weapon at the scene, according to the News Affairs statement. No officers were hurt in the incident.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has been notified of the man's death, a spokesman for the office said, but he had no further details as of about 8:15 a.m.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting.
