Northwest Indiana residents still cleaning up after storm

Posted: Updated:

Residents of Northwest Indiana were still cleaning up Friday night, 24 hours after a strong storm knocked down trees, ripped off rooftops, and left thousands without power.

NIPSCO said that 2,000 people remained in the dark on Friday afternoon.

Some of the worst damage was in Gary and Merrillville. The roof was ripped off an apartment building and a church.

A lot of debris from the apartment building was thrown on to dozens of cars in the parking lot. Many people were not being allowed back into their homes.

"We were told our apartment was the worst. We can go to the shelter or wait it out. But they can't do anything for us,"said Victoria Davis.

Across the area, people spent the hot day cleaning up.

"You are looking that foundation of my garage but the roof and siding are on my neighbor's garage," said Linda Long.

Many others who were lucky enough not to suffer any damage to their homes were still struggling to figure out what to do without power.

"We've been to the library, to the mall, and the house is 92 degrees, so we will end up at my sister's house," said Pam Hudson.
