'Savages,' Katy Perry in 3D, Justin Bieber girlfriend trouble: Zwecker

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's the weekend! If you're looking for something to do at the movies, FOX entertainment reporter Bill Zwecker has the scoop on what's hot to see or not to see.

As we come to the end of this holiday week, Oliver Stone is back with a hard-edged, often-violent thriller that is more like the Oscar winner's earlier films.

"Savages" is well-titled - reminiscent of earlier Stone films like "Natural Born Killers," "U-Turn," or "Salvador."

This is a terrific film, ripped from today's headlines. Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson are two laid-back California marijuana growers who end up in a deadly mix with a vicious Mexican drug cartel run by Salma Hayek and her brutal enforcer played magnificently by Benicio Del Toro.

John Travolta delivers perfectly as a crooked cop, and Blake Lively is spot-on as the hapless, kidnapped girlfriend.

This is a winner from start to finish, though it is "R" rated for a reason: strong violence and language.

Also new at the multiplexes is "Katy Perry: Part of Me," a true 3D extravaganza that is a far better documentary than I thought it would be.

Perry's charm, immense talent and unaffected candor add a true "backstage pass" aspect to this film. She exposes quite a bit of her personal life - as well as her personality - and the scenes with her now-ex-husband Russell Brand certainly hint at what's to come.

But the best parts of this, probably not unexpectedly, are the spectacular performance scenes as Perry tours the world.

Even non-Perry fans will get a kick out of this one.

Bill also has the latest buzz on Tom and Katie, Seth Meyers and Kelly Ripa, and the condition of Justin Bieber's love life.
