Evanston native sings national anthem at Sox game

Sometimes sports fans get lucky and a big name artist is on hand to sing the national anthem.

Sometimes singers get lucky and get a chance to try to make a name for themselves in front of tens of thousands of people.

That was the case at U.S. Cellular Field Thursday for Evanston native Ebonique Wool, 22. She was chosen for the patriotic kick off at the White Sox/Rangers game.

Wool has been polishing up her anthem ever since the Sox called two months ago.

"I didn't necessarily think it would happen, but I'm really really happy that it did," Wool said. "I'm trying to model at least the performance aspect off of Whitney Houston's. You know, she looks very happy."

Wool and her aunt, Sophia King, checked out hundreds of versions on YouTube.

"Since high school, I've been singing the national anthem. It's something that I truly enjoy singing," she said. "I don't need to necessarily be the next Beyonce, but I do think that getting better at singing by myself, I'll still feel fulfilled in performing anywhere. I could perform at a Potbellys or something and that would be nice."

"I always thought she had a beautiful voice and I would support her in whatever she tried to do," King said.
