Cyclist, 81, killed in crash with car on Northwest Side

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
An 81-year-old man was killed Wednesday when the bicycle he was riding swerved into a car on the Northwest Side.
Robert Vanpelt was bicycling westbound on a center median in the 5100 block of Devon Avenue when he swerved into traffic about 10:40 a.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
His bicycle struck a car and he was thrown off, leaving him with severe head injuries, police News Officer Veejay Zala said.
Vanpelt, 81, of the 6300 block of North Hiawatha Avenue, was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge at 12:05 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
Police do not expect to issue any citations in connection with the crash, Zala said.
The police Major Accident Investigations Unit is investigating.
