Lawndale neighborhood residents are grieving after a 5-year-old girl was hit and killed on a West Side residential street Monday.
They say speeding cars like the one that hit her are a constant threat.
One day after a Monet Robinson was killed on the street, cars are still speeding up and down Millard Street, some of them going the wrong way on a one-way street. Neighbors say it was a speeding green Pontiac that hit her. The driver slowed down, took a look, and then drove away.
They say the car turned east on 15th and north on Central Park. Monet was thrown several feet by the impact. Her friend says Monet had followed her sister across the street.
Relatives say Monet lived in another neighborhood but visits family on Millard and has many friends. Police say she was hit about 8 p.m. Monday night. She was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where she died.
Her friend says it was very upsetting
"She was trying to follow her big sister, but the car just had left and the car flew and she got hit," Jasmine Noble said.
"The person who hit her just kept going, didn't stop. I'm like, oh, my God, how can you do this to a child," Tambra Powell said.
"All I know is this is the only block that don't have a speed bump in the immediate area. And the kids have really generated tremendously over the past three years and we have to look out for them. It's a terrible feeling to know a 5-year-old was killed in front of your house," said Patricia Hayes.
A family member tells FOX Chicago that police have told them that they are questioning someone. Police news affairs did not confirm that. They say they are still looking for the car, a green four-door Pontiac, possibly a Grand Am. They say it has front end damage and they believe the man is a driver in his 20s.
