A Chicago man was sentenced to six years in prison Friday after pleading guilty to robbing a 65-year-old woman at an Evanston bus stop because he needed money to pay his cell phone bill, police said.
Jason O. Pinnock, 24, of the 7600 block of North Bosworth Avenue in Chicago, was charged with one count of felony robbery, according to an Evanston police release.
Pinnock robbed a 65-year-old woman as she exited a store with cash in her hand about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday near Howard and Custer streets in Evanston, the release said. The woman told police she sat down on a nearby bench to put the money in her purse when the man grabbed the cash and papers from her hand and ran away.
Detectives provided a description to area police units and a beat officer found Pinnock in an alley in the 900 block of Howard Street, the release said. The woman positively identified the suspect as the robber and a nearby police surveillance camera confirmed the woman's story.
Pinnock told police he needed the money to pay his cell phone bill, police said.
On Friday, Pinnock pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six years in prison, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin said.
