Chicago man drowns in Lake Villa

Posted: Updated:

A Chicago man drowned Sunday after attempting to swim to shore from a boat he was riding on with friends on Deep Lake in Lake Villa.

Lukasz Barabasz, 29, of the 3900 block of North Oak Park Avenue, was pronounced dead at 4:23 p.m. Sunday at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey said.

Barabasz was swimming in Deep Lake in front of Jack and Lydia's Resort, 38610 N. Edgewood St. in Lake Villa, Yancey said.

He'd rented a rowboat and was joined by his girlfriend and two friends as they rowed to the center of the lake, Lake County Sheriff Chief Wayne Hunter said. Barabasz, who was a "good swimmer," dived out the boat and said he would swim to shore and meet them there, Hunter said.

His friends rowed the boat to the shore and did not find him, Hunter said. After a search, they discovered him partially submerged in five feet of water just outside the buoys that marked the swimming area of the lake. His friends then took him to shore.

Deputies were called to Jack and Lydia's Resort at 4:15 p.m. for an unresponsive male, Hunter said. Lake Villa fire crews had continued CPR on the victim that was initially started by witnesses.

An autopsy Monday determined that Barabasz died from drowning, Yancey said.
