Chicago asks Feds to pick up $13 million in NATO-related cop overtime

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The city of Chicago is asking the federal government to pick up the tab for about $13 million in overtime that police officers racked up last month when the city hosted the NATO Summit.

The city sent letters to various federal agencies requesting the release of that money and another $860,000 it cost to train firefighters and pay their overtime.

The city is also seeking nearly $2 million from the summit host committee, which raised money in private donations to help finance the summit.

Before the summit, Mayor Rahm Emanuel assured Chicago residents that the federal government and private donations would pay all costs associated with hosting the summit.

Emanuel spokeswoman Jenny Hoyle says the city will be requesting reimbursement for other costs within a month.
