The lowdown on Atlanta Gas Light's pass through charge

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

There are many small charges tacked onto utility bills that many of us don't notice. But how large can those charges get?

For years, FOX 5 has been asked about charges tacked onto utility bills, but one stood out for a viewer. She asked for our help in figuring it out.

She says she moved out of her house during major construction, but she left the water heater on. Her April gas bill stated she only consumed 96 cents in gas. That made a charge for $35.03 stand out. That amount is the Atlanta Gas Light Pass Through Charge.

Atlanta Gas Light says it's the charge for delivering the gas, maintaining the pipeline and meter reading services. So, the upkeep costs a whole lot more than the gas. Once you tack on a customer service charge and state and local taxes, she paid $44 for 96 cents in gas.

Many of our viewers won't like the answer, but that is how it works.
