Chicago firefighter hospitalized after fighting fire in abandoned building

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A firefighter suffered serious heat-related injuries battling an extra-alarm blaze Thursday afternoon on the Southwest Side.

The fire started about 5:25 p.m. in an abandoned building at 2512 S. Francisco Ave. and was automatically upgraded to a still-and-box alarm response because of manpower rotations instituted because of the hot weather, according to Fire Media Affairs.

A neighboring building at 2510 S. Francisco also caught fire and was upgraded to a two-alarm blaze, according to Fire Media, which said the blaze was under control by 5:50 p.m.

People lived in the second building, but firefighters found everyone reportedly inside the home uninjured.

One firefighter was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with heat-related injuries, Fire Media said.

The National Weather Service said temperatures were still in the mid- to upper 80s around the time of the blaze.
