Divers resumed their search Friday for a man, believed to be from Berwyn, who disappeared while swimming off a pontoon boat on Loon Lake in north suburban Antioch.
Police said the man, who is 62, jumped off a pontoon boat on Thursday afternoon to swim with a friend.
Both men struggled to get back into the boat, but one was helped to safety by another boater. The friend called 911 at 2:13 p.m. and reported the man went under water and he was yelling for help.
The other man has not been seen since.
An alarm for rescue operations brought divers and boats from Antioch, Fox Lake, Lake Villa and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District.
The sonar team, a joint operation with several departments, was also called into service. As the rescue operation continued there was a call for more divers from other departments because of weather conditions and protocol that only allows divers to do a certain number of dives during an operation.
"At 4:01 p.m., we transferred into a recovery mode," said Lienhardt.
Antioch police said the search, which was suspended overnight, had resumed as of 7 a.m. Friday.
