ComEd insists it's ready for heat wave; suburbanites skeptical

Posted: Updated:

They're getting ready for triple digit temperatures at GM Fishmarket in Evanston, where the  oysters are on ice and the cole slaw and tartar sauce is set on shelves in the fridge.

They're worried that the heat wave will strain the power grid and lead to an extended outage. Last July when the power went out, it stayed off for four days, costing GM Fishmarket $50,000. The owner spent $700 to upgrade the power system.

Thousands of people went without power in Evanston last summer, not just the GM Fishmarket, and they haven't forgotten.

"I ended up having to go to other people's houses who had air conditioning," said Elizabeth Olson. She's hopeful that ComEd will keep its promises to keep the power on.

ComEd said they already have extra crews on the job.

"We have nearly 300 additional crews available to work extended and overnight hours this week," said Michael Guerra of ComEd.
