Chicago cab drivers threaten to strike over new taxi rules

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago taxi drivers are threatening to go on strike over new cab rules taking effect next week.

The drivers protested at City Hall Wednesday.

They claim the rules that take effect July 1 mean they'll have to pay more to lease their cabs, while fares remain stuck at 2005 levels.

The United Taxi Drivers Community Council, which represents 2,000 of the city's 15,000 taxi drivers, said Chicago's fares are among the 20 lowest in the country. Half of the group's members are expected to participate in Monday's strike, so that's less than ten percent.

"We are not going to paralyze the city completely.  We want to give a chance to the drivers to make their living and pay for their lease," said UTDCC chairman Fayez Khozindar.

They said they plan to strike every Monday starting July 2 until the city raises fares.
