Elizabeth Banks and Chris Pine's 'People Like Us' is a family drama worth seeing: Zwecker

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A hot new family drama is opening in theaters this week.

"People Like Us" is a film about a self-absorbed guy, played by Chris Pine, who is estranged from his parents. He learns that he has a half-sister he never knew existed after his father's death.

Elizabeth Banks - who recently visited with us here at Good Day Chicago - plays a struggling single mom who doesn't know Pine's character is her brother until near the end of the film.

It's all about $150,000 that the father left in Pine's care, but meant for Pine to give to his long-neglected daughter. However, since Pine's character himself is in trouble financially, he's torn about whether or not to give the money to his sister - who is unaware of the whole thing anyway.

Recently I sat down with Chris Pine and writer-director Alex Kurtzman, who previously worked on "Star Trek" together.

I asked how it was working on such a different film like "People Like Us."

One final note: Michelle Pfeiffer is absolutely terrific playing Chris Pine's estranged mother. She looks amazing and delivers one of her best-ever performances.
