CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
On this week's Chat Room, Sun-Times Editor Susanna Negovan and consultant Rochelle Trotter dish on parades and profits.
First up, the Gay Pride parade in Chicago drew record crowds this past weekend. Does this signal a greater emergence of acceptance of gay relationships in the Chicago area?
Susanna thinks it does, and loves the parade. In fact, she actually rode on a float in previous years. Susanna thinks that since President Obama came out in support of gay rights recently, the tide has certainly turned and many are now coming on board to support the rights of gay citizens in Chicago and all over the world. This is one of the most fun parades to watch and it truly is a celebration which is worthy!
Rochelle agreed with Susanna, however stating that in her opinion, the big difference is that more people are now being open about their support of gay citizens in Chicago. She believes that no matter if someone has chosen this course in life or feels he or she was born this way, everyone deserves to be recognized.
Next the ladies dish on the recent New York Times article which touted the huge profits of Apple Computer but the low wages of its employees. Should Apple share more of its profits with employees?
Rochelle thinks that it is a private decision of every corporation to determine how much of their profits to share with employees. If employees don't like the company protocol they should look elsewhere for employment. While retail team members are surely the front line "face" of a brand they should definitely be compensated fairly. Perhaps a hybrid base salary plus incentive pay would be a better solution. However $25,000 - which is the average salary of the retail team members per annum - is a fair salary and not below the poverty line.
Susanna agreed stating that these employees are being paid above minimum wage and truly in most cases just ringing up orders as most customers come into the stores knowing what they want. So a wage of $25,000 is definitely fair for retail store employees.
