A 21-year-old South Side man was charged with resisting arrest stemming from a struggle that injured an officer early Monday in the Lake View neighborhood.
Steven L. Harris, 21, of the 5000 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, was charged with one felony count of resisting a peace officer, one felony count of criminal damage to property as well as one misdemeanor count of battery in connection with the altercation, according to police News Affairs.
Harris is scheduled to appear in bond court later Tuesday.
An officer was assigned to crowd and traffic control at the Gay Pride parade at West Belmont and North Sheffield Avenue when people flagged him down at 2:46 a.m. about a fight happening in the 900 block of West Belmont Avenue, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
Officers found a 31-year-old man lying on his back with lacerations, Mirabelli said.
Witnesses said the man who attacked him was standing in front of a nearby yogurt parlor. When officers tried to question him, the man became violent and fled on foot, Mirabelli said.
The officers pursued and caught him, but he resisted and fled to the yogurt parlor where he fell through a plate glass window, according to Mirabelli.
Shards of glass caused the officer to suffer a serious laceration to his right hand, Mirabelli said. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
The suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital, Mirabelli said.
The 21-year-old man was taken in "stable" condition.
