Missing suburban tortoise found

LOMBARD, Ill. (Associated Press) -

A 45-pound tortoise who went missing from the Chicago suburb of Lombard has been located.

The African spurred tortoise named Lance was found safe on Saturday in St. Charles. He's 44.

Owners Andy and Susan Lechner say a visitor to Lombard found the tortoise in an alley last weekend and believed he was wild. The tortoise was kept in an empty pool for several days.

The tortoise was returned following news reports about his disappearance.

Lance isn't the only Illinois tortoise to go missing in recent years.

In 2009, a 30-pound African leopard tortoise named Thelma went missing from Swansea but was returned by someone who spotted her along a road more than two weeks later.
