WAUKEGAN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 6-year-old child suffered a broken pelvis after being struck by a car Thursday evening in north suburban Waukegan, and the driver of the car has been charged with DUI.

The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Prescott, according to Waukegan police. The 6-year old was taken by ambulance to Condell Medical Center and treated for a broken pelvis.

Police said the driver, 48-year-old Jonell Gilmore of Waukegan, appeared intoxicated and a cup containing alcohol was found in her vehicle. She was charged with DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia and transportation of open alcohol in a motor vehicle, police said. The charges are all misdemeanors.

Gilmore was released on a recognizance bond after being treated for minor injuries. She will appear in court on July 17.
