'Seeking A Friend...', 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' good fun: Zwecker

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

During the summer, we usually get big blockbuster action movies with lots of things blowing up. But today, we have a film about a huge asteroid destroying the Earth and it's not at all about tons of explosions.

"Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World" is a truly wonderful film with two totally different characters finding each other, literally mere days before the Earth is blown to smithereens.

An uptight insurance agent played by Steve Carell connects with Keira Knightley's extremely free spirit in this sweet, poignant yet often very funny movie about Armageddon.

It makes you think about what's really important in life, which led me to ask both Carell and Knightley what they would want to do if they knew they only had a few days left.

Who would have thought we'd see the name Abraham Lincoln and the word "vampire" used in the same sentence, let alone combined in a big screen movie?

But that's what you get in the intriguing "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," a gory, yet quirky film that mixes the genres of historical fiction and vampire flicks.

Frankly, I was skeptical about the concept but after seeing the movie, I have to say it is very entertaining, playing off honest Abe's well-known skill has a rail-splitter used here to dispatch vampires with his silver axe.

Yes, you do need to suspend reality quite a bit here but if you do, you're in for a fun ride.

However, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" is R-rated for a reason. It is frequently a bloody good ride.

I also recommend "Brave," the new Pixar and Disney animated film that is excellent family fare giving us a fun new character with the flame-haired young princess, Merida.
