Fire erupts on roof of West Town building

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A fire on the roof of a building in the West Town neighborhood sent "spectacular" plumes of smoke about the city Friday afternoon.

The fire started about 4 p.m. on the roof of a two-story building in the 1400 block of West Erie Street, according to Fire Media. The fire was out by about 4:45 p.m

The "spectacular smoke was caused by burning decking," according to Fire Media Affairs. But while the smoke was thick, very little fire got inside the building.

Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said that roofing materials can easily ignite in hot, dry weather and said smoking and grilling are often common causes of the blazes.

No injuries were reported.
