CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
The movie-musical "Rock of Ages" and "That's My Boy," starring Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg are opening this weekend.
I recently sat down with Samberg in Chicago. I asked him about his exit from "Saturday Night Live," and what it was like working with Adam Sandler, one of his comic idols.
As for Samberg and Sandler's new movie, unfortunately I have to say this is one you can definitely skip - unless you really love gross, R-rated humor that's even raunchier than what Adam Sandler usually serves up.
While the concept could have been funny, with a pre-teen fathering a son that later turns out to be more mature than his dad, so much of this film is just not funny.
That is unless you're drunk or stoned at a frat party or enjoy seeing washed-up '80s icons Vanilla Ice and "Diff'rent Strokes" star Todd Bridges make fools of themselves.
Happily, the other film opening this weekend, which is ironically also an homage to the 1980s, is a real winner.
"Rock of Ages" is a terrific romp, set to the soundtrack of Def Leppard, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Poison and REO Speedwagon, based on the hit Broadway musical.
Tom Cruise is fantastic and almost unrecognizable as an aging rock hero that's a delightful mix of Bret Michaels and Axl Rose.
Kudos also goes to Alec Baldwin as the over-the-top club owner with Russell Brand as his hilarious sidekick.
The storyline is pretty lame - about aspiring rockers going to Hollywood to find their dream - but that's not why to go to "Rock of Ages." It's all about the music.
So there you have it, a split decision on the new movies opening this weekend.
