Chicago police are searching the Longwood Manor neighborhood for a suspect who shot and wounded an off-duty police officer.
According to Chicago Police News Affairs, the 38-year old, 10-year veteran of the force was treated and released from Advocate Christ Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries Friday morning.
He does not live in the neighborhood where the shooting took place.
They said he was sitting on the back porch of a friend's residence, visiting the neighborhood to enjoy a summer evening, when he heard the shots and felt pain at 1:30 a.m.
The bullets appeared to come from railroad tracks news the scene of 97th and Genoa. The officer suffered gunshot wounds to both legs.
Officers searched around the neighborhood and found an abandoned car at 100th and Wood. The driver crashed the vehicle into a parked car, got out and ran away.
It's not known if the car or driver was involved in the shooting. It's not known if the officer was the intended target.
Six officers live on the block where the shooting happened.
"It was scary and close to home," neighbor Debra Robinson said. "I got out of bed, my husband and son jumped out of bed. He told my son, ‘Don't go out there yet.'"
